A new year and a few changes
Jan 31, 2012 Aviator Worship
It’s a new year…and as January closes out and we launch ourselves into a new season of life, we usually like to use this time to make new changes in our schedules and daily practices.
One of the biggest changes we’ve made here at Aviator Church Derby is the difference in our music styles for our 9:30 and 11:00 services.
The 9:30 seems to attract a much more mellow crowd. We like to call them our “Boomers”…as many of them seem to be between the ages of 40 and 60. They enjoy the calmer and more intimate worship music. One of the adjustments we made to better fit what they were seeking was to go with an acoustic set of songs. Tone down some of the distortion and play a few older, but still very deep and praised filled songs. Pieces from Fernando Ortega and Nicky Chiswell. We’ve also done away with the flashing lights for the first service, keeping the light transitions smooth to help maintain a calm and reverent mood without sacrificing the intensity of a true soul-filled worship experience. All announcements have been removed from the worship time to keep the flow of the service even and give just a little extra time for prayer and a scripture reading on occasion between songs.
For the 11:00 service we’ve kept Aviator’s wilder side true. Loud music, flashing lights and LOTS of energy. Several new and more intense songs have been added to the set lists to keep a new and progressive feel to the service. We’ve also kept the new change of leaving out announcements during the Worship Experience for the second service as well to keep the flow even.
I think the changes have been received very well and that people are really enjoying the diversity of the two services. I’m excited to see what else will happen with these changes.

Innovation Resuscitation
Jan 30, 2012 Aviator Worship
With this post, I am speaking mainly to people leading worship for youth. Although, all worship leaders may find something to take from this.
I think a lot of the time, we see another church doing some sick music and we automatically think “that is awesome! If I did that we would grow fast!” A.K.A imitation. We have to keep in mind, most of the huge churches we see are innovators not imitators. If we continue to copy other worship teams we start to appeal to just Christians. What we want to do is appeal to non-Christians, while still playing music that Christians can worship to, and grow closer to God, collectively and personally.
What this means is Innovation. We have to dust of the old idea of trying something new, that has not been done before. We need to occasionally put ourselves in a spot where we need God, not in a position where we do not depend on God.
Take a look at a new genre that is popping up among the generation you are trying to reach. Pray about it and ask for direction from God. Then work like it depends on you and pray like it depends on God.
We are called to reach people. Most students are turned off by worship music, especially the ones who have been hurt by churches. We need to resuscitate innovation.
Work hard and listen more intently.
