Standing During Worship
Dec 12, 2011 Aviator Worship
Ever have those days when you are at a church and you are constantly sitting and standing, almost as if they are just doing it to give you some exercise?
This past weekend, Aviator Students had their first Sneak Peek Service. As I began the first worship song, I realized some were sitting and some were standing. Most people would think to themselves “I forgot to say stand!”, but not me. For some reason or another, I thought “why are some standing and some sitting? Why must we stand?”
So, let’s tackle this in the face! Why do we stand during worship? Some believe that it represents the resurrection of Christ, we are a new creation. In Greek, resurrection (anastasia) means the “standing up again” of Christ. For others, it is a respect thing. Back in the day, men would stand when women entered the room. In the same way, it is respectful when giving praise to God to stand.
On the other hand, when a woman washed Jesus’ feet and dried them with her hair, she was worshiping, and I am betting she was not standing. Our worship is not less in God’s eyes if we are standing or sitting. This also does not mean, if you happen to be in a church, sit when everyone else stands. You can stand to respect others, standing is not a bad thing.
So what is my opinion on this, you ask? I believe you should worship however you feel most comfortable that allows you to worship and glorify God to your full potential WITHOUT distracting others. Keep in mind, sometimes you will distract people; the people that are there for the music, or because their friend dragged them their, but as long as you are not disrupting worship, I think you should feel free to dance, sing, sit, spin, or kneel.
How do you worship?
Work hard, worship harder.
